PMG for Hydro turbines
Generating electricity from renewable sources of
energy has been the need of the hour for many decades now. Many processes have
contributed significantly in making the earth greener and reducing the cost of
electricity usage, hydroelectric power generation is one such process. The old
method of producing electricity involved the use of induction motors. But the
use of a newer technology of permanent magnet generators has increased the number
of benefits gained from this process.
Small plants, run-of-river and penstock,
are those most invested in, as they present two relevant characteristics: low
management costs and low environmental impact.
Permanent magnet generator:
These generators are based on permanent magnet
radial flux technology. The generator structure provides good stability and
higher efficiency. It is a new type of
synchronous machine which is used for motor and general applications.
Mechanically the motor is similar to induction motor, but the mechanism of
generating flux is different.
Powerful permanent magnets create a constant flux in
the air gap, thereby eliminating the need for rotor windings and brushes
normally used for excitation in synchronous motor.
The generators are directly coupled
to the hydraulic turbine (without multiplying gears, elimination of oil and
loss of power) and the rotational speed is coordinated at each moment to the
angle of attack of the impeller blades, according to the available head.
Therefore the efficiency of the turbine remains very high in all conditions of
water and tide flow.
This system provides unique
features and benefits:
¨ Better efficiency (no mechanical drive losses)
¨ Superior reliability (no gearbox, use of electronic components is
minimum)
¨ There is no need for lubrication system
¨ More efficient use of space floor, versatile, can be designed for
buildings and structures
¨ Hence the productivity increases and return on investment time
decreases. This method starts giving profits early.
